Initially introduced in the 1922 catalog, the Martin 2-17 was one of the companies most popular early 20th century guitars, and was the first non-Hawaiian Martin guitar to be designed with steel string bracing. An affordable guitar at the time, this 1931 Martin 2-17 has a big, resonant and articulate sound that belies its very small body size.
Constructed from a Mahogany top with Mahogany back and sides, this Martin 2-17 shares the sort of specifications you would expect to see on the more common Style 17 Martin guitars. Featuring a slot headstock and rectangle bridge, this 1931 model is an example of the plainer design introduced in 1929, with no binding and a simple soundhole ring.
This 1931 Martin 2-17 is in very good condition for an instrument of its age, showing plenty of play wear and patina to the finish. As with most of these early Martin guitars, it is not without some repair work over the years to keep it playing as it should. This guitar has benefitted from a neck reset and reglued bridge, along with a side crack repair from the neck heel round to the end pin, all carried out by our luthiers. This guitar has been given a full service & appraisal by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty.
